Real time videos of auroras (as opposed to timelapse videos) are only becoming possible now because of the improvement in sensor quality… combined with very fast lenses. We are going to see more and more of them.
One benefit of a good timelapse is the potential size of the final video. A timelapse on a Nikon D800 can yield a 7K whereas the video above is only HD (about 2K). Also if the aurora is weak (like most of the ones we get here) you cannot do a video such as the on linked here (not bright enough).
